Many people go through life without expressing their expectations because, apparently, that’s how one avoids disappointment. I don’t know about you but I’m the total opposite. I express my expectations the best way possible and I’ve realised that it doesn’t breed disappointment. It opens up the two parties to dialogue which in many instances has led to creating solutions that satisfy both parties. Rather than disappointment, it creates a clear path\/environment for sound decision-making. However, today I am not focusing on limited expectations but exceeded expectations. There is One that always exceeds our expectations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My expectations range from the smallest of wishes to the biggest of dreams. In the book of Ephesians, we are reminded that God will do exceedingly, abundantly, above all that we could ever ask or imagine, according to the power that works in us. Loosely explained as I have witnessed in my life, this power that works in me is my will, my passion, my desire. I believe that these are desires that God gave me because Psalm 37:4 says, ‘He will give you the desires of your heart’. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now to Him who is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>Ephesians 3:20\u202d-\u202c21 AMP<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Here are three examples that put my interpretation of the above scripture into perspective. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Becoming an Accountant<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In pursuing my dream to be an Accountant, I applied to local universities and of all, only one accepted me but gave me Economics. I declined the offer and decided to wait till I got an accounting program. Several months down the line, I got a scholarship to study accounting in South Africa. The process of getting into the accounting program is still a mystery which needs it’s own blog post. I got an acceptance letter without completing an application form because I had been allocated to Forthare University to study Business Management. I only completed my application form after arrival at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (“NMMU”), which is now the Nelson Mandela University (“NMU”). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

H<\/span><\/strong>ow God exceeded my expectations:<\/strong> <\/span>I thought I had been accepted into a General Accounting degree program. However, upon my arrival at NMMU (now NMU) I quickly learnt that I had been accepted into a Chartered Accounting degree program. If you know the difference between the two then you’d understand how much of a big deal this was. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Lecturing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After spending a year tutoring accounting at NMMU, the teaching bug caught me. When I got into the tax profession, I looked for opportunities to lecture tax in local colleges that provide tuition for professional courses offered by institutions like the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (“ACCA”) and Institute Of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators in Zimbabwe (“ICSAZ”). For three years, I never got a breakthrough there. Trust me, I applied to all the colleges in Harare that I knew (or didn’t know). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How God exceeded my expectations:<\/span><\/strong> I was looking for college opportunities but God had set his sights for me to get into a University. When it happened, I was approached by both the Midlands State University (“MSU”) and the University of Zimbabwe (“UZ”). I grew up in Gweru but currently residing in Harare, thus, I chose to go with the UZ. I went to the meeting thinking they needed me to be an assistant for an undergraduate tax course. I was then advised that I was meant to take up the tax portion of an MBA module. Two years later, I was given my own executive management course in International Tax as a part-time lecturer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Leadership Program<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I always wanted to attend the Brightest Young Minds (“BYM”) Leadership Summit in South Africa. It is a program that provides a platform for young African leaders to put their heads together and find solutions to social and environmental challenges. I applied twice and didn’t make it on both attempts. To learn more about their program, visit the BYM site<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How God exceeded my expectations:<\/span><\/strong> He got me into a global leadership program as compared to the regional one that I wanted. Yes, I made it into the coveted Mandela Washington Fellowship (“MWF”). The MWF is the Young African Leaders Initiative’s (“YALI”) flagship program, which brings African civic, business, and community leaders for academic coursework, leadership training, and networking at U.S. colleges and universities. This is my God, He goes beyond my expectations. These are just a few examples that I have chosen to share, I could write a book on my life’s journey because God has always exceeded my expectations. It started with just a desire, a will to do something, His purpose. So, I asked and imagined, and this is what reminds me to dream BIG<\/strong> because my God is bigger. If you see my dreams now, you can only conclude that I am crazy. But that’s me and my journey with the One who goes beyond my wildest dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
