We pay taxes frequently especially value added tax (VAT) on the groceries and toiletries we use in our daily lives. We never think hard about it because we have no choice but to pay for the goods and services we need. In my opinion, we seem to have no problem of paying taxes for the goods and services that affect us directly.<\/p>\n

A tax is a financial charge or other levy imposed upon a taxpayer by a state or the functional equivalent of a state to fund various public expenditures. We pay central government taxes which are administered by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority and we also pay local government taxes which administered by local government authorities, e.g. city council, town council and the rural district council.<\/p>\n

Why then do we choose not to pay tax on our business and investment income? Sure, we do understand the issues of liquidity but we also have those who actually have the cash and still choose to evade tax. It is a matter of ethics because being ethical is doing what the law requires and tax law requires us to pay our taxes in full and on time. So what are you going to do from now on to be an ethical taxpayer? Evading taxes is unethical and criminal, do the right thing and pay your taxes.<\/p>\n
